Review of Fireflies : Maya Khandelwal

Review of Fireflies: Maya Khandelwal

What is absolutely endearing about the book is the teenage lingo that the writer uses.
Yes, the so –called linguistic purists might crinkle their noses at this, but one cannot expect teenagers to spout verses from Milton and Keats , at the drop of a hat , can one? So , the book is liberally peppered with hinglish slang and truncated vocabulary -[dude, OMGs, yaars.]  This is the way teenagers speak , and that is why the book is going to appeal not only to teenagers but also to their parents .

Written in a very engaging style, which borders on the lyrical at times, the book goes straight to the heart , at times making your eyes sting with unshed tears .
It motivates , it inspires and it gives succour to young hearts .It is like a 'not- to -worry- sweet -hug' from loving parents and almost an antidote to the poison of trials , torments and tribulations that the youngsters face .
The book gives us a peep into the teenagers'
psyche , their dreams , ambitions , aspirations , their jealousies , frustrations , their infatuations and break-ups ,and you almost feel a sense of dejavu going through certain passages - hadn't your teenager gone through the same patches - bright , grey , black - happy , sad ?
Yes , to use the teenage lingo , the book is absolutely 'cool ', not the run -of - the mill stuff which publishers these days glorify as literature .
Go hitch your wagon to the stars , go touch the stars , go fly untrammeled in the blue skies , the author tells the teenagers .

Absolutely rivetting read for those 'timorous parents harbouring certain trepidation' , and also for all youngsters , to whom  the author lovingly gives the  earnest message,  that no matter what the ups and downs of life , someone is always listening .
So you young guys there , don't give in to depression , because a break -up is not the end of the world , nor is the choice of  opting for the wrong subject .
This book is a must read for all
